about collections

As I've already mentioned, most of these collections of images are connected by place and/or time except in a few cases where the relationship is more thematic.

It's an genuinely difficult curatorial problem to try to decide how to group images: a number of approaches came and went before I finally settled on this very simple one which is mainly based upon location. This means that landscapes sometimes find themselves next to people pictures or abstracts with the only thing that they have in common is being in physical proximity. This is by no means insignificant since one of the things that characterises a location for me is the quality of its light: for example, the constant haze of seaspray from large waves breaking upon huge cliffs gives the coast of Devon a very different illumination to to the flatter coast of Suffolk and Essex. Similarly, the relatively unpolluted air of the Southern hemisphere gives Sydney a brightness and vividity not common in the North: maybe we can group pictures by the quality of light as well (as good a criterion as any and perhaps more relevant than most!)

You'll see a list on the right of the "collections" window from which to choose a slideshow.
